| LUMPY SKIN DISEASE
The current lumpy skin disease vaccine was developed in South
Africa from the so-called Neethling strain, to deal with this
devastating cattle disease. This safe and effective vaccine
is used to prevent this insect-borne disease which has the
potential to destroy the countries dairy and hide industries.
In the last 3 years the demand for the vaccine has trebled
to cope with control of the disease in neighbouring countries.
RIFT VALLEY FEVER
Rift valley fever is a virus disease which causes massive
losses of stock due to abortions and deaths in newborn animals,
resulting in serious illness. OBP is the only vaccine producer
in the world which produces RVF vaccines on a commercial scale.
The vaccines have been used to protect stock in South Africa
since the last outbreak in the 1970's. It has also been exported
widely to help fight recent outbreaks in the Middle East.
BLUE TONGUE
Bluetongue vaccine was developed by South African scientists
in the 1940's to deal with the 15 different virus serotypes
which are prevalent in the country. At present OBP is the
only producer worldwide of commercial bluetongue vaccine,
which is manufactured both for domestic use and export to
European countries where the disease is currently causing
concern.
AFRICAN HORSESICKNESS
South Africa now has a thriving horse industry thanks to the
development of a vaccine by South African scientists. This
vaccine produced by OBP is used to protect horses against
many strains of AHS both in South Africa and in other countries,
such as Spain, where the introduction of infected zebra caused
a severe outbreak. This outbreak was effectively brought under
control with widespread use of the vaccine.
