| Vaccines are biological products,
which means that they are perishable. To ensure that the maximum
benefit is achieved in the use of vaccines it is imperative
that the utmost care be taken in the handling and administration
of vaccines.
The following guidelines should be adhered to at all times;
- Most vaccines must be stored at temperatures between 4°C
and 8°C. It is recommended that a cooler box with ice
packs be used to transport vaccines from the point of sale
to the farm. During the vaccination of animals, vaccines
should also be kept in the cooler box. Do not freeze vaccines
which have to be stored 4°C - 8°C as this will destroy
them.
- Always study the instructions on the package insert carefully
before the vaccination procedure. Information is updated
from time to time and users are urged to take note of changed
instructions.
- Do not use expired vaccines. Vaccines are biological
products and have therefore limited shelf lives and should
not be used after the expiry date.
- Vaccinate healthy animals only. Animals in poor condition
are under stress and may not respond sufficiently to vaccination.
- Always observe good hygiene principals during vaccination.
Sterilise syringes and needles by boiling in water for at
least 15 minutes. If possible use a sterile needle for each
animal.
- Check the prescribed dose and route of vaccination on
the package insert before vaccination. Also check accuracy
of automatic syringes before use.
- Shake the vaccination bottle well before use and avoid
exposure to high temperatures and direct sunlight during
inoculation. Do not mix vaccines in syringe with any other
product.
- Always record batch numbers and expiry dates of vaccines
used, for future reference.
- Keep vaccines out of reach of children, uninformed persons
and animals.
- Consult your veterinarian or OBP on the correct use of
vaccines and immunisation programs.
