Vaccines - 2173

Freeze-dried, live attenuated ephemeral fever virus for the prophylactic immunisation of cattle against
ephemeral fever/three-day-stiffsickness.
Store the vaccine in a refrigerator at 4 °C to 8 °C.
Do not use after the expiry date printed on the bottle.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE
Cattle should be immunised after the age of six months and adult animals can be immunised
irrespective of the stage of pregnancy or lactation. In order to boost the immunity it is advisable to
vaccinate annually. Immunise the animals during late winter or early spring.
The vaccine should be used in conjunction with applying insect control measures for Culicoides midges,
especially during high rainfall seasons.

WARNINGS
Do not slaughter animals for human consumption within 7 days of vaccination.
Vaccinate healthy animals only.
Keep out of reach of children, uninformed persons and animals.
Animals which have previously been inoculated with oil-based products may develop a reaction
at the injection site.
Although this product has been extensively tested under a large variety of conditions, failure
thereof may ensue as a result of a wide range of reasons. If this is suspected, seek veterinary
advice and notify the registration holder.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Use only as directed.
Sterilise syringes and needles by boiling in water for at least 15 minutes. Do not use disinfectants or
methylated spirits for sterilising either syringes or needles.
Since the vaccine contains oil, careful hygienic precautions must be taken during inoculation to avoid
contamination. If inoculations are done in the face of an outbreak of disease, a separate needle
must be used for each animal to avoid spreading of infection.
Avoid exposure to high temperatures and direct sunlight during inoculation.
The active ingredient of the vaccine is in the form of a powder or pellet in a small bottle. Transfer the
contents from the bottle marked Water-Phase to the freeze-dried product. The fluid should be drawn
up carefully into the syringe and squirted into the bottle containing the freeze-dried material until properly
dissolved. Now transfer the total volume to the plastic bottle marked
Oil-Phase. Mix the vaccine and the oil by repeatedly withdrawing the suspension into the syringe and
returning it to the bottle at least 15 times. The vaccine is now ready for use.

DOSAGE:
2 ml subcutaneously

EFFECTS OF THE VACCINE
Small local swellings may occur at the site of inoculation. Immunity starts to develop four weeks after
immunisation and the animals should be protected after six weeks but, however, cannot be guaranteed
in all animals. Annual revaccination is recommended.

PACKING
Available in packs of 5 doses.
