|
Formalinised, aluminium hydroxide gel adsorbed polyvalent
suspension of Pasteurella multocida types A, D and E and
Pasteurella haemolytica type 1 for the control of Pasteurella
infections in cattle. Store the vaccine
at a temperature of 4 °C to 8 °C, in a refrigerator.
Do not use the vaccine after the expiry date printed on
the bottle.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE
In South Africa Pasteurella infections in cattle
occur primarily in feedlot cattle and less frequently
in young
animals under stress.
The pneumonic form of pasteurellosis in feedlot cattle
is accompanied by infections with infectious bovine
rhinotracheitis and parainfluenza type 3 virus and stress
conditions. Cattle should, therefore, be immunised against
infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, parainfluenza type
3 and pasteurellosis before they are introduced into feedlots.
There are a great variety of Pasteurella bacterial strains
and only the most important strains are included in the
vaccine. Consequently the vaccine will be ineffective
in certain instances. If problems are encountered a veterinarian
should be consulted. A special vaccine for specific strains,
that are not included in the standard vaccine, is obtainable
from Onderstepoort Biological Products. WARNINGS
Do not slaughter animals for human consumption
within 7 days of vaccination.
Vaccinate healthy animals only.
Keep out of reach of children, uninformed persons and
animals.
In exceptional cases Pasteurella vaccine may cause shock
reactions. A number of less valuable animals
should therefore be injected first and observed for one
hour before the whole herd is immunised.
Although this product has been extensively tested under
a large variety of conditions, failure thereof
may ensue as a result of a wide range of reasons. If this
is suspected, seek veterinary advice and
notify the registration holder.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Use only as directed.
Sterilise syringes and needles by boiling in water for
at least 15 minutes. Do not use disinfectants or methylated
spirits for sterilising either syringes or needles. Use
a separate needle for each animal. Shake the bottle well
before use. Avoid exposure to high temperatures and direct
sunlight during inoculation.
Depending on circumstances, animals may be inoculated
at any age from two weeks.
Animals which are inoculated for the first time must be
given 2 injections with an interval of 4 weeks. Thereafter
a single booster injection should be given every 6 to
12 months. It is advisable to give this injection approximately
a month before the anticipated occurrence of the disease.
DOSAGE: 5 ml subcutaneously irrespective
of age or body mass.
EFFECTS OF THE VACCINE
The vaccine causes virtually no reaction. A small lump
may, however, develop at the injection site and animals
may show temporary lameness. If pregnant animals must
be inoculated, it is advisable to inject a few animals
before the whole flock is done.
Immunity develops approximately two weeks after inoculation
and protection lasts for about 6 months but,
however, cannot be guaranteed in all animals.
