Rift Valley Fever - Be AwareA Communique from OBP (10 March, 2009)By Dr Jacob Modumo; Technical Manager, OBPOutbreaks of Rift valley fever (RVF) seen in the past 3-4 years have resulted in both economic losses due to mortalities of farm animals and human losses who have contracted the disease. Heavy rains that we have experienced in the last few weeks might be a very good source for vectors to increase possible outbreaks. We will need to be more aware of what the disease is, the clinical signs and how to prevent it.

OBP’s response to the BTV6 outbreak in the Netherlands

The origin of the BTV-6 in the Netherlands has for a while been associated with the vaccine strain from Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP). At OBP, we feel that this is inconclusive, and we wish to affirm our availability to assist in any way reasonably possible. We believe that more needs to be done to determine and confirm the origin of this outbreak through comparative sequencing studies and phylogenic comparisons of the whole genome of the vaccine strain to isolates of wild type BTV\'s from Africa and Asia. Only then can an acceptable confirmation in terms of origin of the BTV-6 be made. We do know that the BTV phylogeny of South African and, for that matter, African viruses have on VP2 alone a close serotype relatedness with each other and the vaccine strain.

Onderstepoort Biological Products (Ltd) (OBP) recently held an extremely productive workshop with interested parties to discuss the humane handling of horses used for testing vaccines. The objective was to identify alternative methods of disposal of horses and to reach consensus and acceptance by all of the parties, to the chosen methods.

Onderstepoort Biological Products Ltd (OBP) has noted with concern the recent e-mail circulated by certain individuals, voicing their discontent with the welfare of horses utilized by the organization for the legislated testing of vaccines. The company is committed to animal ethics and consults with various welfare organizations to this end. Although not required by law, the company proactively developed an animal ethics policy and constituted an animal ethics committee within which welfare organizations are represented.

In a joint initiative the ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute ARC-OVI) , Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP), University of Pretoria – Onderstepoort Faculty of Veterinary Science, Department of Agriculture (DoA) and The South African Veterinary Association (SAVA) organised the Onderstepoort Centenary celebrations to mark 100 years of veterinary excellence. The event will be held from the 6-9th of October 2008 at Onderstepoort.

African Horsesickness received much attention in the media in the past months due to the mortalities it caused. OBP is the only producer of African Horsesickness (AHS) vaccine in South Africa and the vaccine came under scrutiny in the media and television. OBP would like to respond and elaborate on some issues about AHS.
